Music And Its Impact On America - 1273 Words

Music in America has been on the decline since the turn of the millennium. Recent popular musical genres such as rap and hip-hop have promoted sex, violence, profanity, and drug abuse. Artists such as Drake, David Guetta, and Nicki Minaj have missed the mark when it comes to good music. Music is supposed to make people feel something, to take people on a journey. In this sense, music draws a certain parallel to the trajectory of America. When times were good in America, music seemed to be good. Recently, bad music has influenced the mentality of American youth and made them unstable and insecure. Music that has a positive, uplifting message has the power to help. Born and Raised packs positive messages about growing up as an American and experiencing the wild ride of what is human condition. One of the album’s standout tracks, â€Å"Walt Grace s Submarine Test, January 1967,† is a story about a man unhappy with his spot in life. The chorus of the song is â€Å"‘Cause when you’re done with this world, You know the next is up to you† (Mayer). If you timidly wait for change, you’ll never get anywhere; if you face change and accept the struggle and difficulty that comes with it, you’ll have a world of possibilities. Music nowadays is written as to bring people down and make you feel alone. Many pop culture musician’s music lacks a sense of respect for people. Their music objectifies people and talks about ideals instead of appreciating reality. John Mayer has written his fair amount of blues but in his song Speak for Me he sings about the desire to hear a song on the radio that makes him feel good.
